The Summer of Chasing Mermaids
By: Sarah Ockler
Release Date: August 4, 2015

"Sometimes, there are no words… The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse d’Abreau was destined for stardom—until a boating accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago can’t sing. She can’t even speak. Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friend’s invitation to Atargatis Cove. Named for the mythical first mermaid, the Oregon seaside town is everything Elyse’s home in the Caribbean isn’t: An ocean too cold for swimming, parties too tame for singing, and people too polite to pry—except for one. Christian Kane is a notorious playboy—insolent, arrogant, and completely charming. He’s also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesn’t treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life. When Christian needs a first mate for the Cove’s high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isn’t the only thing making waves, though—swept up in Christian’s seductive tide and entranced by the Cove’s charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isn’t what she needs. But changing course again means facing her past. It means finding her inner voice. And scariest of all, it means opening her heart to a boy who’s best known for breaking them . . ." (Summary from

"Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans. Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart. Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her. But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul" (Summary from

No surprise that I loved yet another Jennifer L. Armentrout book. The plot was exciting and the characters were great. As soon as I started reading this one, I couldn't put it down.

Wicked is the story of Ivy who is a part of the Order and hunts faeries. She is committed to her duty after she lost everything a few years ago. Then Ren comes into town and Ivy finds herself getting closer and closer to him.

Ivy and Ren were really great and well developed characters. Ivy is tough and committed to protecting the streets of New Orleans. Ren is the mysterious new guy in town. I loved reading the relationship that developed between these two. They are both keeping their own secrets though.

The plot was exciting and I was hooked from the first page. I couldn't put this one down for long. I did predict the ending early on, but that didn't make me enjoy the book any less. Wicked was a great mix of action, romance, and humor. There were a lot of laugh out loud moments in this book and the romance was hot. The history of the faeries and the Order was interesting and explained really well. I loved the setting in New Orleans as well. It was fun to read along as Ivy hunted for faeries at night on the streets of New Orleans. It also really made me crave some beignets.

Overall I really enjoyed Wicked. I will certainly be counting down the days until the sequel is released. If you are a Jennifer L. Armentrout fan then you will definitely love this one. I also recommend this to anyone looking for a great paranormal book.

The Reading Geek in 2015

Happy New Year!

As the new year starts I want to give The Reading Geek a fresh new start.

In 2014 I really struggled with enjoying blogging, which is what caused the lack of posts for the majority of the year. I didn't even read half the number of books that I usually read per year because I just felt like it was becoming a task rather than reading for the enjoyment of it. It wasn't until this past October that I was reminded again of how much I once loved blogging. I started this blog while I was a sophmore in college and 4 years later a lot has changed for me and I don't think that The Reading Geek is a reflection of that.

So since The Reading Geek will be turning 5 in 2015, I think now is a good time for some new changes.

I will be beginning to incorporate some new things to the blog to freshen it up. I will be trying out some new ways to write reviews. I will also be beginning a new post at the end of each month where I will be talking about the non-young adult books that I have read that month. These won't necessarily be reviews, but more of a brief if I liked it or not list. I will also be trying out a monthly post to give some love to some older books.

I hope you have a happy and healthy year filled with many books!
