On the night before they
leave for college, Clare and Aidan only have one thing left to do:
figure out whether they should stay together or break up. Over the
course of twelve hours, they'll retrace the steps of their relationship,
trying to find something in their past that might help them decide what
their future should be. The night will lead them to friends and family,
familiar landmarks and unexpected places, hard truths and surprising
revelations. But as the clock winds down and morning approaches, so does
their inevitable goodbye. The question is, will it be goodbye for now
or goodbye forever? (Goodreads)
I really enjoyed reading Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between. I'm a fan of Jennifer E. Smith's books because she writes these really cute and sweet stories.
Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between is the story of Clare and Aidan on their last night home before leaving for college. They've been dating for years and don't know whether they should stay together or break up. They spend the night reliving old memories and making new ones as they try to decide the future of their relationship.
Clare and Aidan were both great and realistic characters. They each have their own set of flaws and those flaws come out several times throughout the course of the story. Clare likes to have a plan and make the logical decision. While Aidan rather take a risk and not play it safe. Their relationship isn't perfect either. They are both so different from each other in certain ways. However, it's clear how much these two care about each other. I also loved the side characters, Scotty and Stella. Honestly I would have loved to see even more of them in this book. I especially enjoyed the subplot about the friendship this group shared.
The plot held my attention from beginning to end and I finished this book within one day. For me, this book brought back so many memories of the summer before college. Smith really captures that feeling of excitement, nervousness, and uncertainty. It felt like a lot of the time the characters were talking about the same thing over and over again, but it's realistic. These characters are uncertain about their future and saying goodbye to the people you love isn't easy.
I'm always cautious about books that take place within such a limited time frame, but Smith is one of those authors who always writes it so well. I loved how she gave the reader just a couple of flashbacks between Aidan and Clare, but for the most part this book takes place during one night. I also really enjoyed the setting too and exploring Aidan and Clare's town with them.
Overall I really enjoyed Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between. It was a really sweet and realistic story about moving forward.
