friend, Oliver, reappears after being kidnapped by his father ten years
ago. Emmy hopes to pick up their relationship right where it left off.
Are they destined to be together? Or has fate irreparably driven them
apart? Emmy just wants to be in charge of her own life. She
wants to stay out late, surf her favorite beach—go anywhere without her
parents’ relentless worrying. But Emmy’s parents can’t seem to let her
grow up—not since the day Oliver disappeared. Oliver needs a moment to figure out his heart. He’d
thought, all these years, that his dad was the good guy. He never knew
that it was his father who kidnapped him and kept him on the run.
Discovering it, and finding himself returned to his old hometown, all at
once, has his heart racing and his thoughts swirling. Emmy and
Oliver were going to be best friends forever, or maybe even more, before
their futures were ripped apart. In Emmy’s soul, despite the space and
time between them, their connection has never been severed. But is their
story still written in the stars? Or are their hearts like the pieces
of two different puzzles—impossible to fit together?" (Summary from goodreads.com)
I really enjoyed Emmy & Oliver. I love stories about friendship and this was exactly just that.
Emmy & Oliver is the story of Emmy and her best friend Oliver, who was kidnapped by his father when they were little. Now it's 10 years later and Oliver is finally coming back home. However, so much has changed in those years apart from each other.
Both Emmy and Oliver were well developed characters. Ever since Oliver disappeared, Emmy's parents have become really overprotective. She wants to be living her own life and surfing, but instead her parents are controlling every aspect of her life. She is forced to hide what she loves to do and her own dreams because she doesn't want to make her parents worry even more. I also loved Emmy's other best friends, Drew and Caro. They were great side characters and I loved the bond that they all shared.
Then there is Oliver who is now back home, but it doesn't feel like home for him anymore. He isn't the same kid who disappeared all those years ago. He doesn't remember much about before he was kidnapped and for years he has been living a different life with his dad. Both Emmy and Oliver grow and learn a lot about themselves through the course of the story. I loved how the relationship develops between them. They were best friends before Oliver disappeared and now there is this 10 year gap. I also really enjoyed the few chapters that were stories from Emmy and Oliver's childhood. It was great to see how close they were before they were separated.
The plot was captivating and paced fairly well. It did get to be a bit repetitive in the middle though. There was plenty of drama in this story, but there were some really cute moments too. I also really loved the way that Benway showed how much the kidnapping had an effect on Oliver, Emmy, and their families.
Overall I really enjoyed Emmy & Oliver. I think that it was a really great story about friendship and family. I definitely recommend picking this one up!
