"Ashlyn: A lonely society princess living in New York City. Daddy hired you to be my bodyguard. Colin: Childhood enemy, now her protector. Daddy thought I’d be safe. He thought I’d never fall in love. He thought he could keep me forever. Charles: obsessed with keeping her safe, keeping her his, he hires the one person he knows she could never fall in love with: Colin. Daddy was wrong." (Summary from goodreads.com)
Jennifer Laurens' Overprotected is the story of Ashlyn whose parents are extremely protective. They force her to have a bodyguard with her at all times. However, her newest bodyguard is Colin. Ashlyn's father hired Colin knowing that she could never fall in love with him because of their past relationship but he may be proven wrong.
I really enjoyed Overprotected and finished it in one sitting. Ashlyn's parents are wealthy but obsessed with her safety. She isn't given much freedom at all and she is lonely as a result of it. I think Ashlyn handled her parents overprotectiveness much better than I ever could. I would have gone crazy with that many rules. I especially liked how her character began to grow and develop as the book progressed though.
Ashlyn's parents were intense to say the least. Her father especially had an odd obsession with her safety. It was interesting to learn why they were so protective but I thought that they still went to some extremes. Colin is hired to become Ashlyn's new bodyguard and I easily fell in love with him too. Colin and Ashlyn have an interesting past. He is a few years older than Ashlyn but their families were good friends. Ashlyn hated Colin while they were growing up and still holds the grudge.
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this book going into it but I was pleasantly surprised. I liked how Overprotected also handled the topic of family throughout the story. The plot is exciting and is paced well. It could get predictable at times but I didn't mind it at all. I definitely plan on reading more by Jennifer Laurens in the future. I highly recommend Overprotected, it is an enjoyable and quick read.
