"The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck." (Summary from goodreads.com)

Jennifer L. Armentrout's Half-Blood is the story of Alexandria who is born of a Hematoi and mortal which makes her a Half-blood. Unlike the children of two Hematoi Pure-bloods who have powers, Alex has limited options for what she can do with her life. She can either train to hunt and kill daimons or she can become a servant. Another important rule is that a Half-blood can't have a relationship with a Pure-blood. Alex is already in trouble with the Covenant for her lack of obedience but she is also starting to have feelings for Aiden. However, that is the least of her problems because Alex must survive long enough to become a Sentinel.

I loved Half-Blood and stayed up all night reading this book. The characters are each strongly developed, especially Alex. Alex is such an awesome character. She is funny, selfless, tough, and more than capable of taking care of herself. She has been through a lot but she doesn't give up. From the first page I was immediately cheering her on.

Then there is Aiden who I am seriously crushing on now as well. He is a Sentinel and helping train Alex. He is sweet but still tough. The chemistry between Alex and Aiden is evident from the beginning and I loved how the relationship between them developed. There are so many other characters that I loved as well such Caleb, Deacon, and of course Seth.

The plot is fast paced with plenty of exciting action scenes. Not only was there plenty of action but, there were also some funny moments as well as a few scenes where my heart broke for Alex. I loved the interesting and different mythology that Armentrout uses. However, the characters were definitely my favorite part of this book. I'm so excited to see where this story will go next in the sequel Pure. I will be anxiously counting down the days until April 2. I highly recommend Half-Blood, you will not be disappointed!

  2. Agreed completely with your review! Jennifer knows how to create layered characters and they truly made the already amazing plot really stand out. I'm eagerly looking forward to Pure, too -- especially for more Seth. He's definitely an intriguing character.

  3. Unfortunately for Dawson, he is a triplet. His slightly older brother, Daemon, is sort of a pain in the....well you know. And if you've read Obsidian...you really know. Daemon is against his brother's infatuation with Bethany...he doesn't see any way for their relationship to end well. Also, relationships with humans just don't make sense...but Dawson doesn't care about that. He just knows Bethany is the girl for him and he's not going to play by the stupid Luxen rules.
