"California teen, Sadie James, thinks her life couldn't get any better. She has great friends, an energetic mother she adores, and the beach practically in her own backyard. But her carefree life is turned upside down when she's rescued by a mysterious and strangely familiar boy who won't even tell her his name. Each time the boy appears, Sadie's unexplainable attraction to him deepens along with her need to unravel his secrets. The boy is there to protect her. But as wonderful and exciting as it might be to have an irresistible boy with crystal green eyes protecting her every move, every minute of the day...why does Sadie need one? As Sadie finds answers, she realizes her life isn't as perfect as she thought. Not only is she caught in a world of dangerous secret agents she never knew existed, but it turns out her true identity may be the greatest secret of all." (Summary from goodreads.com)
Christie Anderson's Deep Blue Secret is the story of Sadie who is living an almost perfect life. However, Sadie's world is turned upside down when a mysterious boy saves her one day. She instantly feels a connection to the stranger and he shows up again when she needs him the most. Sadie soon begins to unravel a secret involving her and why she would need constant protection.
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from Deep Blue Secret but I really enjoyed it. Sadie is an interesting protagonist. She lives a seemingly perfect life but she begins to feel as though something is off and her moods keep changing uncontrollably. One of my favorite aspects of the book is Sadie's relationship with her mother. Her mother is energetic and works late shifts at a hospital. However, they still manage to share breakfast together each morning and set aside certain days to spend together.
Rayne is the mysterious boy that rescues Sadie when she needs it the most. I enjoyed unraveling the mystery of Rayne as the story progressed. The chemistry between Sadie and Rayne is evident from the first time he rescues her. I especially enjoyed the chapters that provided a deeper perspective into Rayne's life and thoughts.
I loved the setting in California and the beaches but I may be a bit biased because personally California is one of my favorite places in the world. I enjoyed unraveling the mystery in the beginning and I liked how the information is gradually explained. The chapters occasionally switched between characters which helped move along the plot and provide an understanding into the character's motives. Although the ending was a bit predictable, I still enjoyed it. I recommend Deep Blue Secret and I will definitely be looking forward to the next book in this series.
