"Elizabeth Valchar --- pretty, popular and rich --- wakes up the morning after her 18th birthday on the yacht where she’d been celebrating with her closest friends. A persistent thumping noise has roused her. When she goes to investigate, she finds her own drowned body is hitting the side of the boat. Liz is dead. She has no memory of what happened to her, and can only observe in horror the fallout of her death. She’s also soon joined by Alex Berg, a quiet boy from her high school who was killed by a hit-and-run driver. The two keep each other company, floating in and out of memories and trying to piece together the details of what happened to each of them. In her regular life, Liz was a runner. It wasn’t abnormal for her to run 8-10 miles per day. But as memories from closer to her death begin to surface, Liz finds that she’d been running much more than normal, and that she’d all but stopped eating. Liz’s mother, who died when Liz was nine, had battled with anorexia as well, and those around her worried that Liz was following in her mother’s footsteps. But something more sinister was consuming Liz from the inside out..." (Summary from

Jessica Warman's Between is the story of Elizabeth who discovers her own dead body after celebrating her birthday on a yacht with her closest friends the night before. Elizabeth can't remember how she died or how she spent the past few months leading up to her death. Alex, a boy who died a year earlier who also attended school with Elizabeth, joins her and together they watch the effects her death has upon others while trying to discover the truth about why she died.

I enjoyed Between and was immediately captivated by the mysterious plot that begins instantly in the first few pages. Elizabeth is a superficial popular girl who grows up as the story progresses. I didn't like Elizabeth and her friends for the first half of the story until another side to their personalities and a deeper understanding into their lives was shown. Alex is the opposite of Elizabeth and struggled to fit in when he was alive. It was interesting though to see how the relationship between Elizabeth and Alex grows.

I enjoyed how the story flashes back to moments in Elizabeth and Alex's past. Elizabeth has another chance to go back to certain moments and see something she had missed completely or how she could have made a different decision. It was interesting trying to solve the mystery of Elizabeth's death and the months leading up to it. Many clues are dropped from the beginning and all of the pieces fit together in the last few chapters. Between is a suspenseful and heartbreaking story whose characters will stay with you long after you finish.
