"Can there truly be love after death? Drifting in the dark waters of a mysterious river, the only thing Amelia knows for sure is that she's dead. With no recollection of her past life—or her actual death—she's trapped alone in a nightmarish existence. All of this changes when she tries to rescue a boy, Joshua, from drowning in her river. As a ghost, she can do nothing but will him to live. Yet in an unforgettable moment of connection, she helps him survive. Amelia and Joshua grow ever closer as they begin to uncover the strange circumstances of her death and the secrets of the dark river that held her captive for so long. But even while they struggle to keep their bond hidden from the living world, a frightening spirit named Eli is doing everything in his power to destroy their newfound happiness and drag Amelia back into the ghost world . . . forever." (Summary from

Tara Hudson's Hereafter is the story of Amelia who has spent years hanging around the river she died in. Amelia does not remember how she died in the river or anything else from when she was alive. However, everything changes for Amelia when she saves Joshua from drowning in that same river and they form a special connection.

Hereafter is a well written romantic but chilling story that is hard to put down. Amelia develops a great deal throughout the story and we learn about Amelia's mysterious past life along with her. Amelia and Josh's relationship is love at first sight but develops into a more believable relationship as they learn more about one another. I still can't decide on how I feel about the characters of Eli and Ruth though.

I liked that the plot picks up immediately and there were still a few surprises in the end that I was not expecting. Overall I really enjoyed Hereafter and I think Hudson makes an excellent debut. A few questions were left unanswered which is why I am going to be looking forward to the next book in this series. I also love the gorgeous cover and the blue and green colors it uses.
