"Everywhere Silla Kennicott turns she sees blood. She can't stop thinking about her parents alleged murder-suicide. She is consumed by a book filled with spells that arrives mysteriously in the mail. The spells share one common ingredient: blood, and Silla is more than willing to cast a few. What's a little spilled blood if she can uncover the truth? And then there's Nick—the new guy at school who makes her pulse race. He has a few secrets of his own and is all too familiar with the lure of blood magic. Drawn together by a combination of fate and chemistry, Silla and Nick must find out who else in their small Missouri town knows their secret and will do anything to take the book and magic from Silla." (Summary from goodreads.com)

Tessa Gratton's Blood Magic is the dark story of Silla who has a strange connection to blood. She sees blood everywhere since her parent's murder-suicide. While still coping with the death of her parent's death, Silla receives a mysterious book in the mail that belonged to her father. The book is filled with spells that each require blood. As Silla becomes infatuated with the book, she meets Nick, the new boy next door. Nick also shares a spell connection with the book and together they must uncover the secrets surrounding the magic and who else knows about it.

Gratton creates a vivid setting with complex characters. Silla is going through a difficult time as she deals with the death of her parents. Reese is Silla's older brother who stayed home to take care of his sister. Reese and Silla have a strong and loving relationship. Nick is the new kid and has a complicated past with his own parents. The chemistry between Silla and Nick is instant and their relationship only grows stronger as they dive deeper into the magic.

Blood Magic is a captivating and unpredictable story told from three separate perspectives. The plot picks up immediately and does not slow down. I have been hearing much about this book for months and it does not disappoint. Blood Magic is a mysterious story that I highly recommend and I am anxious to see where Gratton will take this story next.
